Sookera raced for Robert Sangster, who also sold Mofida,
ancestress of Zafonic and his clan, to Abdullah. So he deserves
some reflected glory for the succes of these two families, even
if Juddmonte's continuing history of production of high class animals
from them reflects its own shrewdness in choice of mates since they
were bought. The legacy of James Delahoke's work in the early days
of Juddmonte's development remains through other families which
are still giving Khalid Abdullah such great success both in Europe
and across the Atlantic. What a year he is having and what an operation
he runs! American Post on Sunday was his 16th Gp or Gr 1 win of
the season, all of them by homebreds.
Before leaving Three Valleys one has to give a word
to his maternal great grandsire High Line, who has proved such a
stout and class-consolidating influence in so many distaff pedigrees,
even speedier ones. The grandson of Hyperion's contribution through
his duaghters and granddaughters hasn't been recognised. More than
once, for example, one has heard the British National Stud's Danzig
horse Golden Snake, whose dam is the smart High Line race mare Dubian,
being referred to almost dismissively as 'all High Line' in looks
rather than following his sire. That may be true but it may not
prevent Golden Snake, a smart enough racehorse, becoming a good
stallion - especially as a sire of fillies.
HIGH LINE
Golden Snake's dam Dubian was placed in the Epsom and Irish Oaks
and is dam of the brilliant miler Sayyedati. Dubian was one of a
number of smart fillies like Shoot A Line, granddam of Thundergulch,
and other good staying horses by High Line, who was out of a mare
from one of the Boussac families. The Barnetts, who stood the horse,
bred the great racemare Time Charter out of a High Line mare. Delahooke
was responsible for Juddmonte using High Line to their continuing
advantage. Soviet Line's dam Shore Line and the Irish Oaks winner
Pure Grain's grandam were other daughters of High Line bred by the
Barnetts.
