Stud Management

James is currently involved in the management and direction of four studs in England. This is an aspect of the business at which he excels, and where his 40 plus years of experience in several different continents stand him in good stead. Whether it is stud design and layout, building design, fencing and paddock layout, soil chemistry and grassland management, James knows the answers – and if he doesn’t he knows a man who does.

James Delahooke has a flair and knowledge. He is an outstanding judge of a horse. He helped lay the foundations of my stud in my early years as a breeder.

Recent projects have included the design of Whitley Stud in Gloucestershire for Dominic Burke – a greenfield site which has been transformed into a superb, state of the art, private stud.

With a broodmare band of 12 mares costing an average of £100,000, the stud has sold 10 six-figure + foals and yearlings since inception. And bred Champion Hurdler Katchit and Oaks Trial winner Miracle Seeker from the same foundation mare, Miracle.

Lawn Stud in Nottinghamshire has been another success story, culminating in the Oaks win of homebred Look Here, whose grand dam was sourced for the owners by James Delahooke. Look Here’s dam, Last Look, was unable to race due to very offset knees. She was due to be culled but fortunately the owners accepted James’s advice to give her a chance at stud. She bred seven winners from seven foals, including a classic winner. YOU CAN’T BEAT EXPERIENCE.

Selection of foundation mares, arranging matings to appropriate stallions, and maximising the stud’s environment to achieve the genetic potential of the progeny are all part of the global service. References available on request.
